What is an HRV?

LifeBreath Heat Recovery Ventilator
An HRV is a Heat Recovery Ventilator, a mechanical unit, that exhaust stale inside air out of home and replaces it with fresh outdoor air. The HRV incorporates a heat exchanger that will recover the heat from the stale air and transfer it to the fresh incoming air, resulting in energy savings along with a much more comfortable indoor air environment. Bath fans and range hoods also exhaust stale/humid air out of homes but do not have the capability to replace exhausted air which can create a negative pressure in the home that may create a host of issues with fireplace drafting, cold drafts, sewer traps and more.

HRV’s have been installed in new home construction in the last couple decades because of the implementation of vapor barriers installed between indoor wall and ceiling coverings and exterior. During most common household activities, such as showers, dishwashing, use of cleaning sprays, the humidity created, harmful agents and odors are trapped within the vapor barrier capsule and may cause damage to indoor surfaces, cause respitory problems and other environmental issues. HRV’s are most beneficial in the winters months when exterior windows and doors are sealed tight. A HRV system will make a drastic difference in indoor air quality and make your home air smell fresh.

These air to air energy exchangers are found in modern, energy efficient homes. Due to the tight construction of new homes, your home can no longer “breathe” on its own. An HRV allows for fresh air exchange by exhausting stale indoor air and supplying an equal volume of fresh air from outside, ensuring high quality indoor air year-round.
