Main Causes of a Septic Back-up

Septic Pump Out
Most septic system back-ups are preventable and can be avoided with regular pumping and maintenance checks. Septic system backups always seem to happen at the most inopportune time and may cause a lot of damage and health risks.

Common reasons for back-ups:

Sludge buildup: Some bacteria is unable to decompose all solids in a septic tank and depending on usage, a layer of sludge will build up and if not pumped on regular intervals it will plug your outlet pipe and prevent liquids from getting to the pump chamber causing backups into your home.

Plugged baffles/filters: Some newer septic systems utilize a baffle tee in your septic tank and/or filters that can become plugged with inadvertent household items or long periods of not cleaning. Septic systems should be inspected during pump-outs to ensure filters and baffles are clean.

Pump failure: If your system is a mound type, more than likely it incorporates a pump to discharge the grey water from the pump chamber to the mound system piping. A septic pump has components that wear such as floats, switches, impellers, and more, that will wear out or become damaged due to adverse weather, rodents or overuse. The septic pump should also be inspected during the pump out to ensure it is in proper working order.

Frozen drain field: If winter show up without snow and temps drop into the below zero range for extended periods this can cause any gray water in the discharge line from pump tank to septic field, or the septic field itself to freeze causing the septic pump tank to overflow.

Roots: Some older septic systems may become susceptible to tree roots, if trees are near your septic system. Tree roots will find any breech or crack in the systems piping to get at moisture, especially in the summer when it may be dry. Roots that infiltrate a septic system will quickly plug the piping into or out of the system causing backups to occur.

Avoid the unexpected with regular septic service maintenance today. ASP will pump and rinse both tanks, clean the filter, and check the baffles with each service call. Not to mention, we will also dispose of all waste at a licensed wastewater facility.
